Though I forget the specifics, I was working on something or other transistorized on the bench when one of the electrolytics decided to unexpectedly launch. It hit the inside of the hooded inspection lamp, put a serious dent in the aluminum hood, and shattered the 60W bulb. As @KL7KN noted, the mess was, well ... a mess. Thank God I wasn't hunched over the chassis when that launch occurred. The dented lamp hood showed the potential for sustaining a crippling injury was very real.
They got it wrong, If you really want them to explode, just give them reverse DC voltage! I can't believe they put that expensive lens right in front with no protection on it at all -- a couple doofuses with money to burn I guess But at least they tried to keep a safe distance. 73
