Just reported by the Collins Club Station...

Hey, I just got a wild hair here, and decided to see if I could hear AO-40 (Phase 3D) from the W0CXX club station.

With the satellite fairly far out, and the elevation of the linear
polarized 2m beam 30 degrees off, the signal was S-5 to S-7.
(The GT Orbit is about 500km X 30000km it seems so yes the sat can be "out there" for quite some time... I copied it for over an hour in the club shack)

If anyone is interested, I clip-leaded the audio into the PSK-31 interface, and captured a .WAV file. Here is the link to it.

The beacon is LOUD, much louder than AO-13 was.. Boy, am I looking forward to the day the transponders turn on.
