Invest in MIT's Fusion Reactor and the USA will lead the World easy peasy. Would please me witnessing the ITER being schlonged.
Something tells me the credit card is already maxxed out and the creditors will be by shortly for the scraps.
Man, the fail must have been very ugly, look at the side buildings, one had a stack of some sort on it, and now it does not... Looks to be laying on its side... Cables must have been whipping around... Also, note the dust in the air around the base of what is left of the two vertical cable holders in the distance... It appears that the entire top sections came down as well...
Remember all the great people and work that AO enabled and showcased. Support their efforts to move on. 73 Chip W1YW
One of the towers collapsed in the top section. There is building damage. News freeze from UCF. The shot was taken by a neighbor on a nearby hill that overlooks the observatory, a minute or so after the collapse.
So sad. Just collapsed this morning! The Arecibo Observatory is gone. Its 900-ton instrument platform, suspended above a dish in the karst hills of Puerto Rico, collapsed this morning, at about 8 a.m. local time, says Ramon Lugo, director of the Florida Space Institute at the University of Central Florida, which manages the 57-year-old radio telescope for the National Science Foundation (NSF).
It looks like all three towers have failed top sections... Each tower appears to have had 4 sections in the before photo, and fewer sections in the after photo... I hope there is funding to replace this observatory. Thanks for the timeline, that explains the dust in the air around the tower bases... You know the cable failures had to have taken a long time, did no one inspect anything? I would hate to be the facilities manager right now...
