    One thing to consider...

Previous recent versions of Windows prior to Win X maintained backward compatibility with older 16 bit apps (and drivers and DLLs and...). Win X dropped that backward compatibility.

So if you have (had) an app that required at least some level of 16 bit compatibility...

Also, most retail versions of Win X out these days are the 64 bit OS. And, again, there are compatibility issues with some 32 bit apps (and almost none with 16 bit apps). Now, there IS a 32 bit version of Win X — I’m running it on all of my home machines. All of which were originally Win 7 or Win 8 32 bit machines that got the upgrade.

I know that there are at least SOME 16 and 32 bit apps that will not run on a Win X 64 bit OS, but CAN and DO run on the Win X 32 bit OS.

So maybe one just has to have the right version running. Not that getting it is the easiest thing in the world...

Offhand I would say that if so many machines weren't visiting online porn sites, the rate of fatalities would drop significantly.

That's more true that some would care to admit. "Install this virus disguised as a video viewer to see free porn..." seems too tempting for some.

But I can't help but to giggle with a little liberty with your response...

I previously posted a thread in Software and Computing forum, with reference to my FT8 input/output going squirrelly after a major Win10 update, I didn't get any replies as everyone must have thought I had lost the plot. However it seems I wasn't wrong, the update had decided my speaker and microphone settings were wrong and it should put them right. It has taken me hours to balance things out between the PC and Signalink.
Thanks MS for being so considerate, as to my personal needs.

A funny side note to this:

Yesterday I watched a snooker match in TV (yes, I do crazy things sometimes). Suddenly a pop up window appeared on the electronic score board asking to start an update - after some confusion (and the player at the table missing an easy shot due to that) some smart person found the mouse and clicked on "Ask again in 1 hour".

Even when they try to be polite, MS interrupts your work , makes the notification obnoxious, and demands that you handle the interrupt right now!

Charles I think you can go back to Windows 7 if you upgraded your machine from that version. Its in your control panel. If not...see post #143 above.:D

I have moved everything to another PC with WinXP and DOS 6.22

PC'S are cheap and this one is specifically dedicated to running amateur radio software.
