When I was a yute in Silicon Valley, our family had a Danish Folkboat: http://www.sfbayfolkboats.org/history/ An absolutely gorgeous yacht. My dad "Captain Bligh" Nichols had us kids working on the thing every weekend, but it didn't hurt us none. At any rate....this was long before I had a ham license, and I was just thinking what a blast it would have been. Anyhoo....if any of you are sailors (meaning a pilot of an actual SAILboat), please do some hamming for me. I'm 400 miles from the nearest body of water, and unless I want to sail my Viking ship up the Yukon River, I'm sorta landlocked. So, tell me your hamming/sailing adventures so I can live them vicariously. That is all.
No replies? I'm a land animal but I think it would be awesome to set up on a sailboat, like my Dad's 33' Irwin (that I've sailed in once)...and hit the Atlantic, or the Caribbean. I can picture which rigs and antennas to use and how everything would be set up.
Being a seafarer time ago, I used to think could be a dream life, forever. But, admiting the truth, living at sea is just the opposite, seedy ports, mainly, extremely perilous waters, for most of them, thanks to ever growing piracy, pollution quite everywhere, excessive regulations and prohibitive costs and taxes. You could, for a few thousands miles, let's say, convince yourself you're totally free, but that's it. I was a believer too, in the 70s, not so much in the 80s. Oliver
