Because he did. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Lee_Ermey
It took all of 10 seconds to find that.
You get the Prize Mr Glen
He was indeed a Marine before he was an actor. He was a veteran of the Vietnam war and former drill instructor.
He was promoted to gunnery sergeant after he retired from the Marines and started acting for his profession.
He was indeed a Marine Corps drill instructor. In "Full Metal Jacket", he wasn't really acting, he was doing what he had done for years. Many of his lines were ad-libbed - after all, who knew better?
From what I have read, he was originally hired as a technical consultant, but the actor they'd cast for Sergeant Hartmann couldn't do the job, so Ermey got the role.
Never could figure out why folks sitting at a computer asking a question on a forum can't simply do a search and get a readily available answer.
In a forum, if you get an answer you don't like, you can just berate the person who gave you the answer. If you just go to Wikipedia or Google or wherever, and you get an answer you don't like, who can you yell at?
The Cable Company!
It's called "social interaction."
You know the feeling of posing a question and then later interacting with other human beings about the subject matter. We used to do this in our classroom before too. A student would ask a question about something and then everyone else in the group would start having an open discussion about it. ...Kind of like what we are doing now huh?
Sometimes human beings can provide you with a special insight about something that an online encyclopedia can't. Perhaps, they might even share their own personal experiences with you about something in the process. For example, wouldn't it be nice to find out if someone else also served in the U.S. Marine Corp here on the Zed?
Also wouldn't it be great if Google could replace that kind of human interaction people experience with one another?
...Unfortunately it doesn't.
You said you couldn't figure out why folks sitting at a computer asking a question on a forum can't simply do a search and get a readily available answer. I suppose I too could refer you to conduct a Google search for that answer. However, in this case I hope this human interaction we are having with one another has provided you with the valuable insight you were seeking.
Because it's easier.
