Here's a question that's been bugging me a bit....what percentage of the ham population actually votes? I don't mean showing up every 4 years to vote for your President, I mean mid-term elections too. How many are informed on the candidates platforms? How many can name their Senators and Representatives?

Hams (myself included) are quick to criticize the ARRL for their success record, or lack thereof, in Washington. But, if you choose not to be part of the political process, you should not be complaining about it on the Zed. Many times I have seen people post that the ARPA just has to be passed by Congress to become a law. Apparently these folks don't even know how the legislative process works. So the question is, how politically savvy is the average ham? I'm almost afraid to know the answer.

A LOT more people are into guns than amateur radio. Which happens to be my two favorite hobbies! :)

    Some interesting stats...

Of all the gun-owners (well over 7 million in the USA), ~8% are NRA members.
Compared to ~20% of amateur radio ops (of the 750k+ in the US) who are members of the ARRL.

In 2017, the NRA generated nearly $380 million in total revenue. ARRL, less than one million dollars for the same year.

Well, at least we have our priorities straight. SHTF and what will be most important is food and enough firearms/ammo to protect it.

It must be cultural. I've lived in a suburb of NYC for 62 years and never once have I felt the need to own or fire a gun. Maybe it's that NYC is one of the safest cities in this country will a very low crime rate or perhaps I am lucky. My hobbies are ham radio and record collecting

Not all firearm owners are into it for the need to shoot someone. :)

I'm into the hobby for the sport (examples), although the benefit of self-defense is fine too.
Never shot anything but paper, and hope to never have to do otherwise. But I train for that too.

I figure, even if lucky to never need it, the exercise and mental disciplines are worth the efforts.
Shooting is about the only exercise I get!

I have no problem with that type of shooting. It's my belief that if a person wants a gun (in a suburban or city location) that he or she should keep it at the gun club. There is really no reason that a person walking down the street should be holding a gun. Rural areas are different and of course not everything is set in stone. I just believe that many people misinterpret what our founding fathers wrote. The point of having a gun (A musket when the law was written) was to form a militia, not to fight off criminals (real or otherwise). I keep hearing about how a person should carry a gun to protect themselves but in my 62 years I have never heard of anyone successfully doing that, today's instance in Wisconsin not withstanding.

Yes individuals may misinterpret what the founding fathers wrote we have a Supreme Court to make that interpretation .

There are cases I won't say daily but frequently where armed civilians are involved in preventing individuals and even police officers from becoming killed or injured. It's about finding the proper news sources.

While accessing an ATM in San Diego during daylight hours, three males attempted to rob me. They were not successful and no shots were fired. I doubt the odds would have stayed in my favor if I wasn't carrying. Carrying is not for everybody, but I'm OK with it.

That says a lot about what news source you use.

And the attitude that dependence on others is preferable to personal responsibility. Unfortunately, that same attitude can lead to fostering bigger, more intrusive government and perpetuates the acceptability of expanded welfare into a career goal for some. Now that I read what I wrote, it sounds like a political ad in California.

This thread is heading off into the weeds. But there is one point worth emphasizing: HOAs are yet another level of bigger, extremely intrusive government. Their power needs to be limited so that it does not get out of control - as it does when they attempt to effectively ban amateur radio operators from practicing their art.

What government agency would they fall under ?

That seems to be a common misunderstanding of convenience.

Actually, by maintaining local control, it is effectively the smallest level of small governance only as intrusive as the residents choose it to be and within the absolute control of its constituents who vote. People choose to live there and also choose who manages their neighborhoods. There is no greater antithesis of "big government".

None, and that’s the trouble. They are omnipotent. So we have to get the federal government to intervene. :)

I won't go into details but I will say that my news sources are wire services and a country full of affiliates and reporters.
