Because hams are cool (when it isn't 96 degrees C!), and the Webb telescope is very cool, so, you know. We're cool! ;-)

They have to transmit those pictures tens of thousands of miles.

Good to know that KM4BUN Audrey found another workfield in hamradio to bring it to a wider crowd of people. A good idea, because new workfields need to be found to take hamradio into the future. Only to have an eye on the technology or make contacts around he world cant be the only thing.

The long path on that would be insane (and exceptionally redshifted)! o_O

Rumor has it that the Webb Telescope is a big fan of FT8 :D

Well, who knows. We have hams using Earth orbiting satellites and bouncing signals off the Moon. Perhaps QSOs via more remote deep space units will happen. The challenge would be terrific, but if the Voyager signals are still being received it's conceivable we can do this. The book Contact talked about hams receiving space signals and one science fiction story from the 1950s mentioned hams keeping in contact with Luna City. Maybe in another generation that will be routine.

Definition of deep space is beyond our solar system. I dont think that we will ever reach those limits in private. All we do is in lightspeed and we cant change it. The time is against us. Of course scientiest found new things in space to understand how to get faster. But this will take so many years to understand this fully. And the communication cant get faster. There is no matter and antimatter system to speed up. But dreams in those categories are always allowed. Star Trek is a dream too. And in some parts we are near.
