What is interesting is that right from the start of World War I the Germans were aware of people listening in on their signals. Or maybe their army was ahead of their navy. Read https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a401881.pdf for a good account of how the Kaiser's troops listened in on the Czar's invading armies, which transmitted to each other in the clear. This helped result in the massive German victory at Tannenberg.
This is a good follow up documentary on what happened to the intercepted signals and the effect they had on the outcome of the war. What neither of these videos tell us is that the Poles were regularly intercepting and deciphering German military traffic from as early as 1933. They passed their work onto the French and the British just before the outbreak of war. Gordon Welchman's The Hut Six Story is well worth a read on this subject.
Indeed a fascinating video, explaning a lot of what happened behind the " curtains " and it shows how important our hobby is during wartime. HAM radio amateurs played a major role in our own Dutch history during the floods in 1953 . PD5GUZ
Never seen this before but an excellent insight how the 'amateurs' ended up being the 'professionals'. I love the last 30 second CW clip. Wonder how many 'Woodbines' and 'Players Navy Cut' were left smouldering in ashtrays whilst the VI's deciphered that crucial line of code. A great insight - and maybe something today's younger generation could learn from. Agree with 'OILY' Dave - that's when the BBC produced some class documentaries - pity the bar has dropped in the recent years. 73 - Steve G0UIH
Oh, the bolly (champagne drinking) Bolsheviks at the BBC ... How they'll talk us through the war when it's decided who won and who's side you ought've been on.
Fascinating video, thanks for much for making it available. Very neat, especially if you match it up with the story of Bletchley Park, Enigma, Turing, etc....

One certainly must hand it to the Britt VI during those days. What a remarkable achievement to have effected with the spectacular results of dupping the German intel.
They are the greatest generation, we are enjoying what we have now because of there actions and sacrifices.
