I own a Ft857d with dtmf mic. Local area repeater is all star/ IRLQ and another echo-link capable. If I can key up with dtmf commands why do I still need a node as simple single user? The echo link works but not sure about the access on IRLQ/All Star, Very new to all this and finding getting things locally worse than a joke.

Normally you need to contact a control operator to get the DTMF codes, And get permission to use them.

You do not need your own Node, But one is handy to have if you travel you can talk on your normal local repeater. You can also talk around the world without the use of a repeater.

    Have Fun.
