One of the greatest and most persistent lies we've been told is that "Necessity is the Mother of Invention." This platitude has been propagated by folks who have never invented anything. The fact of the matter is that nearly all innovation is not the result of an attempt to solve a problem, but rather the happy result of some experiment having gone badly awry. Scientific history fully bears this out.

Some is. A lot is the product of extended and systematic blood, sweat, tears, and hard work. ;)

There used to be a great program on television years ago. Connections hosted by James Burke.
Maybe I can find it on youtube.

A corollary is that laziness is the father of invention... They often go hand in hand.

Warfare is at least a second-cousin to invention. Especially within militaries that are far behind their unexpected adversary(-ies).

The threat of destruction is an unpleasant way to add motivation to an engineering process, but it is inarguably an effective one.

So when are you going to share pics of the corona damage, burned wiring, smoldering coaxial cable, or indoor smoke damage that prompted you to start this thread?? ;)

Laziness is the mother of apprehension.

Necessity can be a real mother sometimes, occasionally of invention.

I'll have to disagree with this. True, there have been some well known instances of lucky accidents which led an astute inventor to realize what happened, but there are far far more cases where inventions are simply the result of lots and lots of boring, hard work...... been there and done that.
