On March 28, 2024 a heartwarming reunion unfolded at the Joynagar border in Chuadanga, Bangladesh, and Gede Zero Point in India. Deepak Kumar, a 35-year-old Indian citizen with mental health challenges, was finally reunited with his family after being separated for over four and a half years. The emotional reunion was marked by tears of joy as Deepak's father, Ram Naresh Thakur, embraced his long-lost son. Deepak's journey began in September 2019 when he inadvertently crossed into the Pirojpur area of Bangladesh from Maniharpur village in Bihar, India. This unauthorized entry led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment in Pirojpur District Jail. Deepak's family remained unaware of his whereabouts throughout his detention, enduring countless sleepless nights and uncertainty about his fate. The turning point in Deepak's story came when Shamsul Huda (S21HD), the organizing secretary of the Amateur Radio Society Bangladesh (ARSB) and a senior cameraman for Ekattor TV, learned of his plight. Moved by Deepak's situation, Huda utilized technology & HAM community in both the countries to trace Deepak's family in Maniharpur village, Bihar. His determined efforts, along with coordination with local authorities, finally connected Deepak with his family Deepak's initial attempt to return home was thwarted in August of the previous year when the Border Security Force (BSF) of India declined to accept him due to the absence of a legal guardian. However, with Huda's intervention and the cooperation of both countries' border authorities, Deepak's repatriation was successfully arranged. The reunion was a poignant moment for Deepak's father, Ram Naresh Thakur, who had longed for this day. His relief and joy were palpable as he hugged his son tightly, finally bringing closure to years of uncertainty. This event not only highlighted the power of compassion and technology in reuniting families but also underscored the importance of cross-border cooperation in humanitarian matters. Shamsul Huda (S21HD) has become a source of pride for the Amateur Radio Society Bangladesh (ARSB).
