    Yeah, most do specify 12 dB SINAD but the ARRL Lab may not measure them that way. Like the FT-736R product review in QST, published in May 1990:

    They measured MDS only, and found it to be -140.5 dBm "with 600 Hz filter" (although my older model from 1987 actually came with a 500 Hz filter! -- not very much difference).

    The also measured MDS @ 500 Hz on the IC-9700 and listed it as -145 dBm (preamp on) but my simple "duh" test doesn't indicate it to be better than the old 736R. Of course, this may vary sample to sample, and perhaps more so with older designs -- especially older synthesized designs where some models might be phase noise limited while others were set up better and weren't!:p Nowadays with SDRs and such, those variabilities are probably much smaller or perhaps gone.:)
