From October 16–19, 2024, our HAM radio group assembled for an inspiring 3rd Field Operation at the Bangladesh Scouts Cumilla Region’s Regional Scouts Training Center. Under the guidance of S21AF and supported by an enthusiastic group of operators, the operation focused on enhancing practical skills, strengthening teamwork, and fostering the passion that drives our community forward. Event Location: Regional Scouts Training Center, Lalmai, Cumilla Nestled in the scenic Lalmai hills, the Regional Scouts Training Center offered the perfect setting for a productive and immersive field experience. Operators spent three days in the field, gaining hands-on experience with antenna installations, communication drills, and mastering the art of HAM radio in real-world conditions. Antennas & Equipment Deployed To maximize communication across different bands, we deployed a range of antennas, each suited to specific frequency requirements and environmental conditions: 10m Yagi Antenna: Key for long-range, high-frequency communication on 10m, this directional antenna allowed us to reach out effectively and experience reliable SSB QSOs. NFHW (End-Fed Half-Wave) Antenna: This versatile antenna, deployed for the 40m, 20m, 15m, and 10m bands, enabled excellent range and clarity on multiple frequencies. Inverted V Antenna: Used for 12m, 17m, and 15m bands, the Inverted V provided a solid configuration to maximize signal strength across mid-to-high frequencies. Radios Used: To ensure clear and reliable communication, we used a diverse set of equipment, including: Icom 706 MK2 Yaesu 857D Xiegu G90 Training & Skills Development Antenna Installation & Calibration: The primary objective was to provide hands-on experience in setting up various antennas. Our participants learned about the setup, tuning, and positioning of each type of antenna: #10m Yagi: Operators mastered securing and orienting the Yagi antenna for maximum range, learning the importance of alignment and height in achieving optimal performance. #NFHW Antenna: The team became proficient in setting up this versatile antenna, practicing techniques for rapid deployment across different bands. #Inverted V: The participants learned the best configurations for height and angle, critical for achieving a solid range and reliable signal strength. Operating the Radio Equipment: The operation emphasized effective use of radio equipment in an outdoor setting. With a focus on the Icom 706 MK2, Yaesu 857D, and Xiegu G90 models, participants developed confidence in tuning, transmitting, and logging QSOs, especially on the busy 10m band. Participants HAM Operators: S21TE S21HN S21RED S21FIA S21ACP S21LEJ S21CAN S21MOB S21HMX S21NWR S21RAB S21CMD Enthusiast: Rafi Nafi Muktadir Mentorship for Enthusiast: Three Enthusiast —Rafi, Nafi, and Muktadir—joined the operation and were paired with experienced operators. They received hands-on training in HAM fundamentals, antenna setup, and communication etiquette. With guidance, they successfully completed their first QSOs, gaining practical experience and confidence. Special Visit from HAM Legends We were honored by the visit of S21RC & S21YLJ, who are celebrated figures within our community. Their presence not only inspired everyone present but also provided valuable insights and tips on advancing our skills. Their support and encouragement reminded us of the power of community in HAM radio and left an enduring impression on all participants. Highlights and Achievements #Successful SSB QSOs on 10m: Our group was able to log a substantial number of QSOs, a significant achievement that showcased our setup’s effectiveness. #Comprehensive Learning Experience: Each participant left with practical knowledge in antenna setup, radio operation, and field communication—crucial skills that strengthen our capabilities as a team. #Enhanced Team Bonding: Working together on complex tasks fostered stronger connections among members, reinforcing our commitment to mutual support and learning. Moving Forward: Building on this Success The 3rd Field Operation was more than just a training—it was a memorable experience of growth, mentorship, and teamwork. We’re excited to carry forward the skills and inspiration gained here and are already looking forward to our next operation. We aim to build on these experiences, continue exploring new bands, and enhance our technical expertise. 73s to Everyone! Thank you to all the participants, our supportive mentors, and especially S21RC & S21YLJ for their invaluable guidance. Here’s to many more successful operations and the future of HAM radio in Bangladesh! 73, S21AF Abdullah Al Fahad
Excellent! I would have liked some more video, but great anyway. 2 comments - Fantastic to see so many young people involved, it's not like that in Australia any more. - I wish we had availability of those bamboo poles you were using. Keep up the good work.
