I have a 3 phase transformer, it is the type with 3 sets of windings with 3 core legs not 5. Can I simply cut this down to 2 sets of windings ? for use on edison 240 single phase - typical residential service ?? What would the derating factor be ?
My brother bought a single phase to three phase converter used for a reasonable price used. He runs his three phase equipment on his house power. Just an idea you might consider. There are several standard voltages found on this equipment. 120/208, 240 delta (no wye or "wild leg"), and 277/480.
If the transformer has three independent cores, then two of them can be re-wired for 240VAC. 3-phase transformers, using three separate cores, are connected in a delta-wye. Separate the pri. and sec. wires of all transformers. On two of them, connect the primaries in series in series=aiding. The secondaries can be connected in series or parallel, depending on your voltage/current needs. Experimentation, using a 'scope or a VM will show you the correct phasing.
