second best after roof mount, is Hood mount. TIP of antenna does not hit drive through roof.

    Try simplex sometime.

If you are just using strong, local repeaters you will not notice much difference between antennas BUT,
if the repeaters are so crowded durinig drive time, you don't have a chance to say anything, Try asking someone to meet you on a simplex frequency and have a nice rag chew.
Using a 5/8 wave will give you more noise free DX to another mobile, Especially roof mounted.
. I went one step farther and got a Hustler 7/8 wave 2M co-linear antenna (about 7 ft tall) and mounted it on the roof with a fold over fixture to get in the garage. GREAT for SIMPLEX QSOs !
One more curious thing I discovered. Guys who just stick to repeaters can't tolerate ANY NOISE at all on a signal, when they try to go simplex, and quickly say 73 and disappear. To solve that problem I got a 140 W amplifier and then I could work anyone I could hear on simplex !
