That's weird, why would you need a license to win? You don't need a license to attend. Anyone can own a ham station, you only need a license to transmit with it.

Things were different in the day.

I remember having to show my license to buy a radio that would transmit.

    I think AES required Proof.

A Technician who now owns an over 13K HF rig…..only in America..lol!

Hope he upgrades so he can at least use it. Or maybe he’ll be listing it here soon….

I have his sales pitch already for him…

“In excess of my needs, mint condition, like new still in the box. Buyer pays shipping and taxes.” :)

I know this has been discussed before, just seems so strange. Lot's of hams working on their first license bought a radio to listen with. Parents or spouses could buy a radio for their newly licensed kid/spouse. There was never a law... seems like a sales prevention program to me!

I have bought 8 figures worth of equipment from Motorola over the years, they never asked me for a license - to buy. Put on the air is something else...

I would have been fine back then. By the time I had saved enough money to get my first radio (a Yaesu FT-60R)…..I was General.

Now a days you can get Hooked Up at the Truck Stop.

In more ways that one...

My ex-XYL (WN4YNC) won a Knight Kit Star Roamer at the Charlotte Hamfest around 1973 or 74. I had fun building it :)
