I keep telling folks there is more to life than two meter FM.. this was a great opening and 6 has also been open..

get a ft-847, a ts 2000, a ic-706, something that will do all mode all band.. and work the world.. on cw, psk31, ssb, sstv, rtty.. EME, tropo, and more... tom N6AJR

35 grids 156 contacts during the 2 meter es event. Wow!
Makes listening to years of static worth it.

Callsigns listed are just the initial contacts for that grid.
Look at FN30 and FN31 almost 40 contacts in
just those two grids. Do you people in 30 and
31 work or just stay home and listen to two
meter SSB all Day.  Ha Ha.   Glad you all were there.

well, i was fortunate enough to work 2M skip but I did get to work 6 USB from the mobile. I have an OA-50 on a 97 saturn 2 door and it was great, mobile 6 from EN82 with a 60+s9 signal into arkansa great day for 6, was open for me for 2 days, hasn't been open sense then. hopefully we can get to work some more 2 and 6 before the summer ends.

I was also fortunate enough to overhear that the VHF bands were open on July 6th. I was mobile near Atlanta and went to 6M (FM) and made a contact at Dulles Airport, VA. This is over 600 miles! I was very impressed. I also began scanning the 2M band and listened to a couple of NY repeaters. It is definitely fun and I hope we have more openings like this. [IMG]

What a day it was. At mid day, a friend across town dropped me an email to say two was open to Rochester, NY (we're in EL98, central FL) at lunch. When I got home, I turned on the rig, worked my first contact in FN35 at 2107 UTC. The band was open 3 hours, with amazing fades.

10 QSOs, 9 new grids, all NE USA and VE (VE2 and VE3).

100W Icom 746Pro and KMA5054 6m log periodic (that works pretty well on 2m).

I worked KC4PX 144.20785 EN98 from EN82 QRP w/Comet tri-band vertical, 05 July 23:20 GMT.  Thanks to VE3TMG for the audio of the contact as I can now know it really happened.  I just hope I don't have to wait 11 years for the next opening, Terry. Tnx to KC4PX for being off the call frequency where QRP and polarized the "wrong way" operators can be heard.

There's been considerable QSB of LOCAL broadcasters on standard FM (88-108MHz)...Even my favorite local station (WFTZ, 101.5MHZ in Manchester, TN) has been wavering with other broadcasters from up to 250 miles away drifting in and out of the passband. Rotten time to not have my 2M yagi up!

For those of us that sit and listen to nothing but hissing and static day after day on 2 ssb this was the pay off!! Great signals, new states worked and was also hearing stations 1000 miles away on 146.580( the local chit-chat freq here in my area of CT) and 146.520. Classic set up - really short skip on 10m ssb in the late morning, really short skip in 6m ssb in the mid to late afternoon and then 2 blew wide open. I was lucky to be on vacation that day. I dont have a big vhf station, 3 el and 80w on 6 and 100w and 10 el on 2. The QSLS are starting to come in now. It sure was a blast!

Well, you know what they say...

Life is all about timing. I had installed a 13-element yagi -- my only antenna for 2m SSB -- just 3 weeks before the opening. I thought I might get lucky and catch a station or two during the Summer. I surpassed that in spades.

It wasn't just SSB, though. I worked several stations on FM, some of whom were using standard-issue 50w mobiles in Northeastern traffic. Lots of FN41s. Fun.

I finally got the last of my cards out yesterday...

Gotta love that E-skip on 2 meter SSB! I logged a few stations in western Michigan that day, and it was all done with a Comet GP-6 Vertical dual bander to boot....Good to hear you had success in one of amateur radios' most challenging and elusive modes on a band that is usually reserved for short distance, line of sight contacts...

There has also been some good repeater skipping recently, as I have been working quite a few Iowa stations at least 200 miles from my QTH. Conditions were particularly good when I started receiving the Jones County, Iowa repeater in Anamosa at 30+ S-units! Keep us all posted of any other cool stuff you work on 2 meter SSB and even anything on 70 CM, I like to see what is capable on a good day...

    73 and good DX,

I was in my car, and accidently hit he reverse button on my mobile, and heard a conversation from Ohio, this made me intereted, and I tuned to 146.52, and behold, the 2m band was open. I made a contact with KE4YZN EN15, and N0MVA EM27, all on 11watts and a 1/4 wave mobile antenna! To cool!! anybody do it with less, I'd like to know... [IMG]
