Reminds me how great shortwave used to be! I miss the cold winter evenings scanning the bands listening to my favorites.

In the early 1970s, Ian McFarland, a longtime presenter for the Radio Canada Shortwave Club, once compiled a series of "Foreign Ident and Interval Signals" that SWLs such as myself could utilize to figure out some of the stations we had heard and recorded. For those here who are unfamiliar, most international broadcast stations as they came up to the top of the hour would play a brief musical passage over and over, to help listeners find and tune in their station. The actual program of news & cultural information then began on the hour or half hour.

McFarland's series was later set to compact disc and sold by mail order. I never got around to mailing off for one, and I wish I had, for most of the stations in his series have now permanently left the air as governments discontinued shortwave service. Perhaps someone can upload the set some day.
