Kühne has a kit for €199 which includes 19% VAT. Take the VAT out, which is normally done for overseas shipments, and it is about $200. The shipping was beyond that. I am considering buying one in a few months but the SG Labs may be a better buy.

How much output power does it deliver?

The big difference in cost among transverters is mostly the TX output power. Every Watt at 1.2 GHz costs some real money (unlike HF or even VHF, where it really doesn't).

That's why I use an old LT-23S (SSB Electronics) from about 1980 (10W output) to drive a homebrew external tube amp. It was the only reasonable way to generate any power back then, and 2C39s are very cheap, even today.

SG Labs is ~ 2 watts out, plenty to drive a fet brick amp to ~30 watts(Complete PC board minus the RA18H1213g is $22.50, the fet module is anywhere from $40-70), add a case, connectors, feed through capacitors and you have a 30 watt brick amp that needs 200mw max drive.

    Steve,

I looked and it is only 0.4 watts out. It would cost another $200 or more to provide an adequate power amplifier. And then there is TX/RX switching. I may reconsider and start at a lower cost point with a W1GHZ based transverter.

I'm still puzzled and confused. Unless I'm mistaken, there is a BIG difference between 222 MHz (typically 1.25 Meters) and 1296 MHz (23 cm, and typically 2496 MHz SSB communications!) Just because a company may make a decent or acceptable transverter for 1.25 M, does NOT mean they can make a 1296 MHz transverter! Almost all parts will be different, and certainly things such as transfer relays can (and usually will) have much more loss and SWR at 1296 a opposed to 222 MHz. I'm not sure how a 222 MHz (1.25 M) would help.

Putting another "band" on the air with regards to price is really a question about how much you want to learn about building and troubleshooting gear (low $), or do you want some sort of plug and play (high$$$)

I built my 5760 linear xverter (70k lna 10 watt tx, oven quartz oscillator for barely $200 in parts.

All on a kitchen table with not much more than a soldering iron, a propane torch, a Simpson 260 and a diode video detector and a hand full of attenuators.

    You can too!

I have a loop yagi that I borrowed for our 1255 FM output on the ATV repeater. Its probably 20 elements. I've never used it. I'm wondering how to tell if I can use this on 1296. My analyzer goes up to 230Mhz, and other than measuring the length of the element on the loop, I'm not sure if its got the legs to go up to 1296 and be even halfway decent. I don't have any 1296 stuff to test it.

Usually it's the same exact model for 1255 or 1296 MHz, there's only about a 3% difference in frequency.

All the Directive Systems 23cm loop yagis are rated 1250-1300 MHz with no changes required:
