A 10W Baofeng? Reviewing the UV-S9 Plus + REAL POWER Test

Best way to test it is to hold it as close to your face as possible during any QSO.

 

I have 2 x UV5R's and with decent antennas they are more than satisfactory whatever the wattage they actually output. For the money they are brilliant as an entry into the hobby and get you well into it before you reach their limit. Like all cheap and cheerful solutions eventually the frustration with their quirks and limitations starts to intrude to a point where a search for better becomes imperative, unless an experimental trip to a brick wall is desired/encountered . View them as a right of passage.

 

AND has an LED flashlight.

 

And since it's a Baofeng, probably both at the same time.

 

I bought a UV-5R a number of years ago just because they were cheap. Didn't really need a handheld radio, but it has come in handy.

Yep, typical chinese radios. I'm never disappointed about being disappointed when it comes to them.

I’ve got a UV-5R, only because I won it at our Ham association Christmas party one year. Won the extendable antenna the following year! Only 4 watts, and can transmit out-of-band. Had a tornado in our area the other day. People could hear me on it, but they were cutting in & out on me. I would never buy one on purpose!

 

Hopefully someday the people who promote cheap Chinese junk will fade away.

 

That is extraordinary value for money. I spent more that that on beer at my club earlier this evening.
