One Dead, One Injured in New Hampshire Ham Radio Tower Mishap
    07/31/2019
A tower dismantling turned tragic on Saturday, July 27, in Deerfield, New Hampshire, when two radio amateurs working some 40 feet up on the tower were carried to the ground when the structure collapsed. Joseph Areyzaga, K1JGA, 52, of Goffstown, New Hampshire, did not survive his injuries sustained in the fall, while the tower’s owner, Michael Rancourt, K1EEE, 65, was seriously injured and remains hospitalized. Rancourt was taking down the tower in preparation for selling his house, and the pair had nearly completed their work. They were tied into the tower and went down with it as it collapsed.

The tower, a tilt-over model said to be 40 to 50 feet, had been bolted to prevent it from tilting as it was being dismantled.

A law enforcement source said a number of people were at the site at the time for a social gathering as the tower was being taken down, and they witnessed the tragedy.

No official determination has been made regarding the cause of the structural failure, but a radio amateur who visited the scene afterward observed that two of the tower’s three legs were clearly compromised and split cleanly and the third leg bent, just above the fully intact tilt base.

The New Hampshire Amateur Radio tower-related fatality is the second such deadly incident in a little more than 6 weeks. In mid-June, a Pennsylvania radio amateur died when the tower he was installing collapsed as he was attempting to attach a guy line to the structure’s bottom section.

The ARRL Letter for August 22, 2019

A close friend of a radio amateur who died in a recent tower-related accident has contacted ARRL with additional observations.

Joseph Areyzaga, K1JGA (photo), died in the July 27 incident, and the tower's owner was seriously injured. The individual reported that Areyzaga and Mike Rancourt, K1EEE -- the tower's owner -- were in the process of lowering one of the antennas when the tower tipped over. The friend said the tower was genuine Rohn 25, with a genuine Rohn BPH25 hinge plate, and that the apparent -- but not proven -- failure point was not obvious while the tower was still standing. All three pier posts on the hinge plate broke off, with the tower section bolts still intact and in place, he reported. No official determination has been made as to the specific cause of the failure. Rancourt, who was seriously injured in the incident, remains hospitalized but is said to be recovering well.

    Special to The Forum

Joseph G. Areyzaga, 52, of Manchester NH was accidentally killed on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Deerfield NH. Joe and Michael Rancourt, 65, were dismantling Mike’s amateur radio tower on Maple Avenue in South Deerfield when it suddenly collapsed under them. They were both wearing safety belts and fell 40+ feet still tethered to the tower. The two men were transported to the Elliott Hospital in Manchester NH where Joe died of his injuries. Mike was very seriously injured and is recovering in hospital.

Both Joe and Mike were regular attendees at the NEAR-Fest held at the Deerfield Fairgrounds twice annually. Joe was very active on the Interstate Repeater Society Derry repeater and a long-time volunteer at NEAR-Fest.

This is as yet no official determination as to the cause of the accident but it is thought that there was some hidden corrosion on the base of the tower. The men were almost finished their work and had just disconnected the guy wires at the 40 foot level when the tower buckled and collapsed under the additional weight of the two climbers.

Michael Crestohl is a writer and editor for the Near-Fest Forum. He is also the organizer of the Hamfest, which will be held this October 11th and 12th at the Deerfield Fairgrounds.

    HI LEE,
THANK YOU FOR THIS ADDITIONAL INFO ON THE MISHAP.

APPROX. 30 PLUS YEARS AGO, I HAD A GOOD FRIEND W1GPV (FRED WATERS).

FRED WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT JOE AND MIKE EXPERIENCED.

FRED WAS NOT KILLED AND SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN THE HOSPITAL
    AND A REHAB CENTER.

FRED IS NOW A SILENT KEY.

FRED WAS AT THE TOP OF HIS 40 FOOT TOWER ALL BELTED IN AND THE TOWER GAVE WAY
    AT THE BOTTOM.

THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT FRED DID NOT POUR ENOUGH CONCRETE WHEN
DOING THE TOWER INSTALLATION. OVER THE YEARS THE EARTH AROUND THE
BASE OF THE TOWER GAVE WAY DUE TO NORMAL SOIL EROSION.

LEE, HAVE A FUN FILLED WEEKEND.
