    World Space Week

    October 1, 2001 07:30 CDT

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted October 4 through October 10 as World Space week. October 4 is the date Sputnik-1, the first artificial satellite, was launched in 1957. October 10 is the date that the General Assembly adopted the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. The purpose of World Space Week is to celebrate annually, at the international level, the contribution that space science and technology can make to the betterment of the human condition.

World Space Week is not just a United Nations event. Everyone is encouraged to celebrate World Space Week in any way they can. Countries, organizations and people around the world will be celebrating World Space Week. You can find out more on what is happening from the Spaceweek International Association, a non-government organization, at spaceweek.org.

The site offers several opportunities to observe the space adventure of the past four decades. It includes a calendar for activities in many countries and even a kit for teachers to use with their students."
