Eric Sears, ZL2BMI, who joins me from New Zealand, is famous for his 80 meter QRP double side band rig that he designed and documented in the 1980s for his personal use when “tramping” in the forests and mountains of New Zealand. Eric’s stated design philosophy and rigs proved to be robust and foundational for other QRP rig builders, especially in the southern hemisphere.

I listened to this on my way to work today, really enjoyed it, make we wish I had my ham licence when I was backpacking in NZ!
Also really enjoyed the podcast with Jean on her wonderful adventure sailing around the world. I've started driving into work a wee bit slower to get more of the podcast listened to before I get into work!:)

An absolutely wonderful place to tramp, even if you don't have a radio. Post card perfect scenes everywhere!

You can also speed up the playback to make it fit your drive time.

    Cheers Eric,
I live on a small windswept island between the North Sea and the North Atlantic. There's no need to speed anything up! The cars behind me will just have to wait!

Eric, I also enjoyed your program. Thanks very much!

Euan, We’re just finishing up a week stay in Sandwick on Shetland, and I fully appreciate the leisurely driving style here. Our rental car has a six-speed gearbox, and sixth gear is just for decoration on Shetland!

This must be one of the best places in the world for DXing. Open water in all directions and noise floor likely near zero. Along with beautiful scenery and friendly people Shetland seems an ideal spot to live.

Today we’re heading home to California. Warm weather, high-speed lifestyle, intense noise floor!
