The Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN® ) Development Team announces the availability of a new stable production release of their software, version 3.21.4.0. This version supports new devices from the MikroTik, TP-Link, GL.iNET, and Ubiquiti product lines. A list of program changes, security updates, and new features since its previous production version can be found on the AREDN website at www.arednmesh.org. Note also that the project’s source code is now located on GitHub at github.com/aredn. AREDN software enables hams, under their FCC license grant, to standup up automatically configured data networks in support of disaster/emergency communications, delivering text, email, telephony, and video services to served agencies in the ham microwave bands at wide-area speeds of up to 144 Mbps. It's not a question of one or the other. Winlink will run over an AREDN network. So the question is will you connect to your post office over packet at 1200 baud or AREDN at 144 Mbps? 73, K6AH
They are running at 902 MHz and above. HIGH speed.... Its like a wifi network, but with no encryption, at least if they wish to comply FCC Part 97 regulations for amateur radio services. NO HTTPS. Probably easy to monitor, not unlike monitoring an open wifi network. Wireshark and the usual tools could be used. Public safety communications will soon be using networks like this. Either 5G or its next generation. Police scanners will be obsolete. Nothing like this near me, but it is interesting. A VERY well documented project.
