I've never ever heard about Einar Dessau. The RSGB has always stated that the first amateur radio station was a man who established his station in Woolwich arsenal. must loook into this.

    100 years of Amateur Radio

The College radio station at MIT say 100 years in operation. The K2AA club in NJ says 100 years in operation with no gaps for WW1 or WW2. So it is easy to say Amateur radio is 100 years old. Just where did it begin is the basic question.

17 year old made the first amateur radio voice transmission 100 years ago.

A 17 year old made the first ham radio voice transmission 100 years ago.

Danish Amateur Radio experimenters (Experimenterende Danske Radioamatører) confirm that the 18 March 1909 is the 100th anniversary of the first amateur radio voice transmission - Attention 100 year anniversary (Aktuelt, Et 100 års jubilæum) on http://www.edr.dk

Ralph Dessau the son of Einar Dessau confirmed that the 18 March 1909 is the 100th anniversary of the first amateur radio voice transmission.

Passport to World Band Radio 2009 also confirm that the 18 March 1909 is the 100th anniversary of the first ham radio voice transmission.

On the 18 March 1909, at the age of 17 years of age Einar Dessau (1892-1988) of Denmark make the first ham radio two way voice communication with Lyngby Radio using a short wave radio transmitter.

Einar Dessau later held the amateur radio call sign OZ9DES.

100 years ago Einar was sitting on the floor (straight back and legs crossed) facing 12 inches away from a cone microphone. This microphone was almost as large as his face.

Imagine an ice cream cone horizontal with the wide end facing the speaker. http://spurvely.dk/dessau.html

Music from a gramophone (record player) could also be played into this microphone.

In the early days of amateur radio before the start of commercial broadcasting radio amateurs talked to each other on the air and played music and songs for anyone who had a wireless (radio).

Valdemar Poulsen 1869-1942 inventor in 1898 of the Telegrafonen (the first electromagnetic recording device) was the one who put Einar Dessau on the path to wireless (radio). http://www.rostra.dk/louis/andreart/ValdemarPoulsen.html

In 1909 Einar Dessau was also interested in flight using a hang glider. He became a move scriptwriter and director and held the amateur radio callsign OZ9DES.

The QSL card confirming his 1909 transmission can be seen on http://www.passband.com/2008/11/

See more on “Telegragh (Morse code) to Radio” on http://www.elmus.dk/Files/Billeder/standere/telegraf_stander_til_web.swf

    HAPPY 100th anniversary.

Here's hoping that amateur radio will be broadcasting from the planet Mars on the 200th anniversary or at least from the Moon.

    "100th Anniversary"

Not sure who the first ham really was, but I think it was more than 100years ago. For example, Irving Vermilya, W1ZE (SK) was operating in 1901/1902 with a set given to him by Marconi, whom is father took him to meet. He was involved in a teenage telegraph network from 1903 to 1907 and received the first wireless license in the US in 1912 (pre-FCC). Obviously there were others if he was having any QSOs! (Google Irving Vermilya - lots of information on early wireless.)

The Danes invented AR? ROFL! Aren't they happy just to have invented the Danish? Happy 105 years plus, AR! Thanks for not waiting the extra 5+ years to be invented.

    Probably a bit older!

Yes, Amateur Radio pre-dates 1909, depending on how one defines it. Marconi's accomplishments were widely covered in both the popular and scientific media of the day and individual experimenters were quick to duplicate these experiments. I suspect most of these early experimenters would not have called it "Amateur Radio," however.

In my opinion, if one were to select an official 100th anniversary of the "Amateur Radio Service," I would select 2012 as the year. Why? It was the passage of the Radio Act of 1912, which first authorized the Department of Commerce to regulate and license Amateur Radio stations and operators. It was also the Radio Act, which first assigned spectrum to Amateur Radio; the supposedly useless wavelength of 200-meters.

Sure, there were radio experimenters long before 1912, but as to an official 100th Anniversary date for "Amateur Radio" as currently defined, I vote for 2012. Anyone up for a big party?

KIDS AND SERIOUS EXPERIMENTERS WERE USING SPARK GAP AND CRYSTAL SETS PRIOR TO 1909. THEY USED THEIR NAME OR INITIALS FOR 'CALLS'

    And before that

There was the "Victorian Internet" where landline telegraphers would rag chew and gave us many of our abbreviations and prosigns. Who's to say who started it all?
