Spectrum analysers are a key form of test instrument for RF designers and radio amateurs. Unlike an oscilloscope that displays amplitude against time, spectrum analyzers display amplitude against frequency giving a plot of the signals in the frequency domain. Looking at the control panel of a spectrum analyzer, there are very many different controls to use and this may appear daunting to some. Analogue spectrum analyzers often had controls that needed to be used in conjunction with each other.
