National VOA Museum of Broadcasting to celebrate 75 years of VOA Bethany Station at Sept. 21 event
Seventy-five years ago, propaganda fanned the flames of hatred across the globe in a war that consumed the world.

While much of that propaganda streamed from radio broadcasts originating in Hitler’s Germany and the Empire of Japan, the Voice of America Bethany Station in West Chester helped calm the chaos by transmitting accurate VOA war news to Allied troops and people living in oppressed countries that lacked a free press.

This year, the National Voice of America Museum in West Chester commemorates 75 years of the Bethany Station on Saturday, Sept. 21 - and wants you to join in the festivities.

The VOA museum will host “Celebrating 75 Years of VOA Bethany Station” on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the museum at 8070 Tylersville Road in West Chester. The evening will include dinner-by-the-bite, cocktails, wine and Cincinnati Liars Lager beer, along with museum tours and a friendly table-to-table Trivial Pursuit game, all backgrounded by the relaxed tempo of cool jazz. Auction and silent auctions will be held to raise funds to make the museum accessible for people of all abilities.

Event sponsors include: Platinum Sponsor Dillard’s; Gold Sponsor Sebaly, Shillito & Dyer; and Silver Sponsors Emery Federal Credit Union; Larry and Sandy Brueshaber; Mr. Mechanic; Oak Tree Communications; and Voice of America Centre. Tickets are $125 per person and $250 per couple until September 1, then $150 per person and $300 per couple afterward. Cash bar, with two drink tickets per person provided. Dress is business casual.

“VOA news gave hope to generations of listeners—and inspired some to fan the flames of freedom in their home countries,” said Jack Dominic, VOA museum director. “Knowing and understanding the story of the VOA-Bethany station and supporting the museum today can inspire all of us to work toward a more just, civil and ethical world embracing the rule of law.”

Additional event sponsors are welcome. Levels are: Platinum Level: - $5,000, which provides two tables, or 16 tickets, and inclusion in all public relations and promotions efforts; Gold Level- $2,500, which includes one table, or eight tickets, and inclusion in PR efforts; and Silver Level, $1,000—which includes two tickets and PR inclusion.

“Our volunteers are creating a unique community asset drawing visitors from around the globe,” said Ken Rieser, museum board president. “The impact Bethany Station has made on global understanding and appreciation of the United States is extraordinary. Almost weekly, VOA listeners from countries near and far come to the museum and share their stories of listening to or viewing VOA news.”

To become an event sponsor or to attend, email Dominic at admin@voamuseum.org or call the museum at (513) 777-0027.

Some of the on air VOA folks I work with in Washington, DC are the best in the business. Excellent broadcasters and a credit to their profession. I was at Bethany Relay as a young ham headed to Stickers Grove one hamfest weekend. The engineers on duty let us in and gave us an unforgettable tour. Definitely an inspiration as I embarked on my own professional broadcast career.
