One of my favorite things to do (other than playing Grandpa or working a rare DX) is I’m a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas time. I thoroughly enjoy doing this! People thank me for doing this, then tell me a story how the Salvation Army helped them or a loved one, if it was paying their heating bills through the winter, or Christmas Dinner, or coats and toys for the children. Once I had a guy in an electric wheelchair (no legs, short stubby things for arms) put money into my kettle to help people worse off than he is!!! Funds raised through the Red Kettle Campaign stay local. At Christmas, services include toys for needy children, food for the family, clothing, and small practical gifts for shut-ins. Throughout the year that same local Salvation Army provides specific programs to aid the poor and needy such as food, emergency and transitional shelter, among many other services. I do not have a Salvation Army on-line kettle. But I am asking everyone to give generously to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign during their travels this year. I usually carry a bunch of singles so I can put a few in all the kettles I pass. Or you can donate at www.Salvationarmyusa.org With everything going on this year, we are all very luck to be on THIS side of the kettle. I think we can share that! Thank you, Bob - KD8WU
And they're Armature Radio folks! www.SaternUSA.ORG for net info. Found them at 14.325 mhz 16:00 UTC Mon-Wed-Fri
I put cash in the can every time - at least when the bell ringers are "of good cheer" and not standing there like manikins and refuse to make eye contact or say a word to those who give. But those are rare. Just a few days ago at the Fred Meyer store, there were three middle-aged sisters as a team and they were just having a wonderful time greeting people, and handing out candy canes to children. It was very inspiring - and they were doing quite well "collecting"! Dave W7UUU
