In this video we review and program the new Baofeng GT-5R radio from Radioddity. According to Radioddity the Baofeng GT-5R is 100% legal with the FCC. the Baofeng GT-5R has 128 memory channels and is rated for 4 watts on high and 1 watt on low with a max power output of 5 watts. The Baofeng GT-5R looks, feels and operates exactly like a Baofeng UV-5R. For the price the Baofeng GT-5R is the PERFECT radio for a beginner, a backup radio, or for licensed kids to keep on them at school.

    Excellent video.
I have baofeng radios that I purchased from wish.
I use them to monitor the local frequencies.
But since the ones I have don’t have FCC compliance stated on them,I don’t use them to transmit.
I have a kenwood thd74 to transmit on.

I think it would be excellent if the local schools would allow students to learn about amateur radio and the digital platform.
Baofeng is a good radio to start out on to learn the basics.

There is a YouTuber who is a teacher and does help his students get their license. Ham Radio is the Original STEM. One of my kids will be attending college next year and she found out while applying for college that quite a number of the universities have amateur radio clubs. If my high school had, had an amateur radio club or the like I might have actually showed up!

Great video, thanks! May have to consider one of these as a throw in the car radio.

You can transmit all you want to, there is no FCC type acceptance for ham gear ;) You can even make your own radio and use it

Yes, there is. Radios that are manufactured for sale must be FCC approved. That’s why when a store announces a new radio, they have text accompanying it saying that the ad is not an offer to sell, as they cannot offer it for sale until it is certified by the FCC.

    Title 47: Telecommunication
PART 2—FREQUENCY ALLOCATIONS AND RADIO TREATY MATTERS; GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
    Subpart I—Marketing of Radio-frequency Devices
    https://www.fcc.gov/engineering-technology/laboratory-division/general/equipment-authorization

Hams are allowed to self-certify transmitters that they built for their own use and can even transfer the equipment to another like licensee, but they cannot manufacture and sell equipment on a commercial basis without FCC approval.

In case you were wondering why Part 90 transceivers don’t have VFOs and why it’s so hard to program Motorola radios:
