All of you guys who helped out with the BB60 USS Alabama Radio Room Restoration will be pleased to learn that the Battleship will be ON THE AIR this Saturday, April 17.... all day! And that's not all. The USS Drum will be making QSO's too. We (The Deep South Amateur Radio Club) will also be sending out special BB-60 and USS Drum QSO cards.

We'll be on 40m and 20m.... and possibly others, depending on propagation conditions.... on CW, SSB, and possibly other modes. SO you'll want to scan the bands, and listen out.

The most exciting thing is that we still have a few spots open for OPERATORS! YES! If you ever wanted to operate from a genuine 1940's vintage Battleship or Submarine, now is your chance. If you are going to be in or near Mobile AL this weekend, we'd love to have you. (You won't be able to just walk up and operate, however. You'll need to let us know when you will be there, and we'll assign a time spot for you. If you are interested, shoot me a quick message here on the Zed, and I'll hook you up with our Battleship coordinator.... but don't delay. Spots are going fast!)

THE WORLD WAR II RADIO ROOM ON THE USS DRUM WAS VERY SIMILAR TO THIS ONE IN THE VIDEO.

yes it is..... and as you can see, it is VERY small compared to the one on the USS Alabama. Great things often come in very small packages!

Wow, that's completely awesome. I'll be sure to tune up my tube amp (oldest gear I have, sorry) to keep it as authentic as I can on my end.

    Thanks Carmen!
I see they used the RAK/RAL combo, I have a super
clean RAL-8 with 115V. power supply.
What did the Drum use for receivers when you served?

What call sign are you using for this event? Is it a club call?

    HI JON,

CONGRATS ON BEING THE PROUD OWNER OF A RAL-8 WITH THE PS......... BRAVO.........

I WAS STATIONED ON THE USS TIGRONE - SS-419 OUT OF GROTON, CT.

    uss tigrone ss419.jpg

WHEN I FIRST WENT ON THE TIGRONE WE HAD THE RADIO ROOM THAT WAS VERY
SIMILAR TO THE SHACK SHOWN ON THE USS SILVERSIDES IN THE VIDEO ABOVE.

THEN IN THE FIRST PART OF 1963 WE WENT INTO THE SHIPYARD DOWN IN PHILLY
FOR AN ENTIRE OVERHAUL OF THE TIGRONE.

UNCLE SAM WAS VERY GENEROUS TO US AND GAVE US THE LATEST AND GREATEST
    COMMUNICATIONS GEAR OF THAT TIME.

HE GAVE US A COLLINS URC-32 AND A COUPLE OF R39OA RXs. WE WERE GIVEN THE
SRR-11A VLF RX TO COPY THE FOX BROADCAST FROM NAA UP IN CUTLER, MAINE.

MY QRZ PAGE HAS ADDITIONAL INFO ON THE TIGRONE.

JON TAKE GOOD CARE OF URSELF AND I WISH U SMOOTH SAILING AND
    POSITIVE BUOYANCY.

sorry for the late reply.... but I was tied up on the radio!
The call sign is K4DSR, and they are calling CQ mentioning the USS Alabama. They'll be on again tomorrow (Sunday)
they were on 40 and 20m today, but not on any fixed frequency. I'd expect the same for tomorrow.... so you'll have to listen out for them.

Thanks Carmen, as My rig is an RAL-8, I assumed it was produced
    later than the RAL-7 series?
