The Icom IC-705 has the ability to set a opening picture that is briefly displayed at power ON. To set the displayed picture, a microSD card is required and the picture converted to a format that the IC-705 can read.

In this video I show the simple steps to convert a picture using Windows and Irfanview and load up a startup picture.

Or just follow the directions on page 9-8 of the advanced manual.

    Cliff Note version: 480 x 272 24 bit bitmap
Copy to OpeningPicture Folder on the SD card
    23 characters max for filename.

I won't. Doesn't do anything important I cannot do with my current radio's. If I was a hardcore backpacker maybe but even then that's a lot of money for such a wet environment.

I won't. Who the hell needs a picture of their mug on the screen of a radio when they turn it on? ;) For $5 I can get a photo of myself and set it on my operating desk hahahahahaha

It could be a good way to ID a radio as yours in the event of theft.
    Victim: That's my radio.
    Thief: No it isn't.
    Police: Got any proof?
Victim: <powers up radio and points to his picture on the screen>

That's why my KX2's start up message is my callsign.

Serial numbers have worked since forever.

They do. Belt and suspenders in this case. It's also an obvious and indisputable mechanism in the heat of the moment, where you'd have to show proof via serial number.

It's not a selling point for me, just trying to think of useful applications...

The video simply shows how it can be done, it doesn't mean it has to be done. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but the option is there and props to him for showing how it's done. Nothing wrong with a demonstration.

I wouldn't want a pic of myself on it, either...scary!...but maybe a nice graphic I created with my callsign and other ham radio related stuff. I can see the appeal for some. And the advantage, if stolen or something.

Does the picture have to be : G / PG / R / or xxx ? / since this is a certified radio by the FCC ?
Interesting legal question for thought !!! What if I sell it & don't remove my photo ? .... ..

The video clearly shows how amateur radio in 2020 has devolved. Nothing quite says technical wizard like a custom boot up splash screen...
