Sputnik and an uncle inspired George Allison, K1IG, to become a radio amateur. George had a long and successful US Navy career where radio was always the center of his activity including MARS stations, a visit to the South Pole, and the operation of very high powered VLF and ELF stations around the World. George promotes the Wordsworth method of raising CW speed above 40 words per minute. K1IG is my QSO Today. Have not seen one of those is a very long time. I knew a fellow named Duffy once. He owned a number of those.
The old Finegayan elephant cage on Guam? Wasn't it shut down in 1999? The elephants are going extinct. Three elephant cages were dismantled as a result of base closures: Ramasun Station, Thailand in 1975. San Vito Air Station, Italy in 1993. Royal Air Force Chicksands, England in 1997. Karamursel Air Station, Turkey, was demolished following a conflict over foreign aid to Greece in 1977. The one at Clark Air Base in the Philippines was irrevocably damaged by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 and subsequently converted to a covered amphitheater Here's an article on the Misawa elephant cage decommissioned and dismantled in 2013: https://www.stripes.com/news/pacific/misawa-to-tear-down-massive-elephant-cage-antennae-1.197638 The elephant cage at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was shut down in 2016, see article: https://www.ktva.com/story/36047522...ified-cold-war-era-antenna-site-now-shut-down The Yomitan Okinawa elephant cage was torn down in 2007:
Technology changes, mostly .... and a few political ones .... but all those elephants who had to find new homes .... anyone else but Bonnie considering them?
Don't recall one being out on the Marshalls...I spent a lot of time at the one on Guam. Co C, Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion/NSGD Guam 1986 - 1988 and 1989 - 1993...TAD at IB while stationed at Pendleton 1st MarDiv 2nd SSCT/SSO. USN had the FRD-10's and Army/Air Force had the FLR-9's. Recall a smaller version deployed at a few sights as well - think called the "Pusher" ie Diego Garcia...Was last out on Guam 2010 and the Elephant cage was still standing but looked like it had taken some damage by a Typhoon. Most were shut down due to BRAC and OBE - newer collection methods on line ;-) Great times! 73, Todd KH2TJ (KG4TR @ NSGA Gitmo 85 - 86)
Yup, I remember the hours operating KG6AAY next to the theater. I wonder what has replaced the dozens of these sites and thousands of ops and matmen today? Whatever it is will likely work until the first EMP or network failure ;-)
The Imperial Beach elephant cage was dismantled in 2015 It is a training location now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Strand_Training_Complex
