Do Earthquakes cause Propagation dropouts? Can the RF-Seismograph see earthqakes?

    Hi Everyone;

    Evidence has been mounting that it might be possible to detect earthquakes by measuring the changes in the ionosphere.

    The RF-Seismograph team has been collaborating with Earthquakes Canada to find a correlation between HF propagation and earthquakes. There were two distinct events that occurred on Nov 1st (M5.0 off the coast of Vancouver Island) and a M6.3 event on Nov 11. in the Atlantic.

    RF-Seismograph Plot displaying the time of the quake M5.0 event below
    The time is PST – 8h (4PM = 000UTC). The earthquake occurred on Oct 31 20:23PST (0423UT)

    Interesting are two things on this plot:
    a.) The rise of the 80m noise level starting at about 0100UTC (red)
    b.) The dropout of communications at about the same time (20m - mag, 30m – yel, 40m – grn)
    The buildup of the energy and the change can be seen about 1 to 2h in advance on the red plot, which measures 80m. After the quake the 80m stays disturbed for another 2h. After that the band recovers.
    [IMG]

    The quake in the Atlantic – M6.3

    I have plotted out the day in question for the M6.3 event and I have found the exact same phenomena the I found on the M5 event, although not as pronounced. This could be partially because it was a deep quake and it most likely effects the ionosphere differently. There is also to consider the fact of the location.

    We only have one active monitoring station for now so our data is limited.

    The 80m rumble can be seen again skirting the event for +/-2h. The time of the quake is also different. It happens in the morning. That is when we have, what we call, grey-line conditions. Gray line is the line that separates day from night and during the changeover shortwave radio activity changes from quiet night time to noisy daytime (it is the best time for making long distance contacts).

    One can see that the 20m (mag) is suppressed until after the noise event. 40m (grn) is also suppressed for most of the event, but it is still there and changing hitting a min right after the quake.

    How is this possible? We can picture field lines extruding from the earthquake zone racing up into the ionosphere. Because we have charged particles (ionosphere) and the field extended from the surface of the planet (earthquake zone), they interact strongly. As we bounce radio signals of the ionosphere any change will affect the way the waves are received on the other side.

    How far reaching is the effect on the ionosphere during such a disturbance? It might be further than we expected!
    [IMG]
    I believe we should investigate this further and will be posting updates as they come available. Comments are also welcome!

    one time the HF band noise level went way up before an earthquake I remember back in the '90s
    ( when the noise level was lower most of the time... before everyone had switching power supplies...

    Seismicity was one possible explanation for a very curious, highly-anomalous spot on 14MHZ WSPR in early January 2018, where two stations within 13km of one another (K6MCS and KJ6WSM) were heard at the same time when no other US station was being heard. It's very difficult to explain two spots from that close to one another when they are the only ones from hundreds of potential transmitters that were heard during night time conditions at 14MHz. The potential link from that area is, of course, the obvious seismicity of the far western US.

    Hi;

    There is a lot happening in the lower band (<40m) that can be related to physical phenomena and I am still learning. With this new discovery I am realizing that the sun is only a small player in the whole scenario of propagation. It looks like earthquakes also have a vital role to play and if you measuring all quakes, even low ones (M2.0) the earth never stops shaking. There is a lot of noise that can be attributed to quakes and it would be interesting to see an RF-Seismograph in a active fault zone.

    Hi Alex,
    If you really think "the sun is a small player in the whole scenario of propagation", then, indeed you do have a lot to learn.

    Hi Bonnie;

    I think I should be more spe3cific.....

    The lower you go in frequency, the noise that comes out of your radio is more likely to come from a terrestrial source.

    I like the sun too... see!!!

    Maybe its flipped about. the sun causing the earthquake events. I think this is more likely as the magnetic fields from the sun do interact with the earth's magnetic field. My wife and I have been tracking earthquakes since 2011. I was at ground zero for the Christchurch NZ quake.

    The amazing stuff is that this can be received by every HF-Receiver tuned to 80m! The only thing you need is LIF-2016 and the RF-Seismograph software to record the noise level of your receiver!

    All the best and spread the word!

    Thank you;
