Has anyone heard anything about the planned contest on 17 Meters by the following group!

I posted the news on my DX blog....can someone explain this activity which was supposed to be prohibited on the WARC Bands.

    Article at: https://wnydxa.blogspot.com/

    Thanks

He says over and over "this is not a contest"

From the link: "Exchange: because this is a QSO event, not a contest, you can talk about whatever you want, in any language, and for as long as you like. Here are some topic suggestions to get the conversation going: name, city, locator, weather, antennas, rigs, etc.
    Also talk about QSL interchange"

Contests aren't "prohibited" on 17 meters - it's just by amateur agreement not to do it. And this is just an operating event to encourage more usage of 17 meters.

What's not to like? I think it sounds fun :)

I disagree....If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
You will see that ARRL activites do not take place on the warc bands...Stupid Idea!

    Mark,

Looking at your QRZ page it would appear, as least on the surface, that you know the difference between a contest and an operating event.

    So why the angst?

If someone stirs up activity on a WARC band that should not be a bad thing, and it sure does not sound like a contest from here.

As Dave mentioned, your opinion has been duly noted. We are free to disagree, right?

ZERO "awards" are mentioned either - all contests that I'm aware of have an awards structure....

Exchange: because this is a QSO event, not a contest, you can talk about whatever you want, in any language, and for as long as you like. Here are some topic suggestions to get the conversation going: name, city, locator, weather, antennas, rigs, etc.
Also talk about QSL interchange. Tell the truth. Say "no, thanks" if you are not interested in QSL cards. But if you would like to have a memory of your contact, feel free to use our EuroBureauQSL (see below).
Logs: for statistic purposes only, we ask participants to submit their logs to party@eurao.org in ADIF format, where the filename should be your callsign (e.g. EA3RKF.ADI).
There will be no results or league tables, only statistical information about number of QSOs, countries, callsigns, OMs/YLs/Clubs, etc.
Certificate of Participation: for those sending the log and with a minimum of 10% QSOs confirmed.
EuroBureauQSL: you can use it to interchange QSLs even if you are not member. In this case, just send the QSL to the entry pointof the country of the station you have contacted.

There is actually no "legal" prohibition against contests on WARC bands.....ARRL has just declined to sponsor any contests on them. No restrictions on other entities....other than abject shame. :p)

Personal attacks are the best you can do?
I find it interesting that the best you can do is a personal attack...That usually means you have nothing to contribute to the discussion of an issue

That's because there is no issue, except in your fevered imagination.

    97:3 (4)
    Amateur service.
    A radiocommunication service for
    the purpose of self-training,
intercommunication and technical investigations carried out by amateurs, that
    is, duly authorized persons
interested in radio technique solely with
a personal aim and without pecuniary interest.

That's about radio operating has nothing to do with submitting a log of contacts along with a fee for the purpose of receiving an award. There are a number of groups or organizations that charge a fee for certificates or awards.

This from the QRZ awards forum.

    • Do you offer award certificates?
Yes! Once you have achieved an award, you will be emailed with a link to purchase a certificate, and a link will always exist on the "Awards" tab of your callsign page."

DX-pedition stations sell certificates to cover the costs of the event. Special event stations sell certificates to cover the cost of printing them.

    This is absolutely NOTHING new.

If you feel however there is an FCC violation, start here: https://www.fcc.gov/reports-research/guides/amateur-radio-complaints but only if the station was in the USA

Posting on an internet forum however will do anything to change what you heard.

But I do wish you luck - paying for certificates and even QSL cards is not remotely new to amateur radio, including on WARC bands. The odds of even getting a reply back from the FCC are so close to zero as to be zero.
