Sue and Jim say some things that I didn't go into deeply and say it better than I could. To avoid chaos the moderator team MUST have credibility and consistency and be accountable and they too need oversight. For example, disappearing posts with no explanation is a bad practice. If it happens often enough there will be problems. A mod sneaking in a final snarky comment and locking the thread is not good either.
Moderators do not need to know much of anything about a topic to do their job any more than a traffic cop needs to be a guru about internal combustion engines. But as we all observe, some people feel they are correct in every case and that's why the various levels of oversight and co-ordination are necessary. Some people are simply over-bearing personalities and would not make for a good moderator based on that alone.

Extremely important. People judge you by the words you use, as the old saying goes...and by how you spell them. Even valid points look bad when they are presented with tortured and incorrect grammar and are full of spelling errors. For someone whose native language in English there is no excuse for this. The occasional misspelled word (i.e., "teh" instead of "the") is a typo. Several repeated misspellings in a single post is borderline illiteracy.
Keeping in mind that political discussions on message boards seldom, if ever, change anyone's opinions on the subjects being discussed, remaining neutral is relatively easy if you think of yourself as the zookeeper in charge of the monkey cage. Just make sure that the monkeys behave reasonably well (for monkeys) and keep them from harming each other. Otherwise, let them be themselves; they're going to, anyway, regardless of what you think they should be.
That depends on the individual. Most people will react to polite advice; others need a 2x4 upside the head before they "get it." Generally, people know very well when they have stepped over the line. That said, there is the "escalation of force" doctrine - polite at first, then judge the reaction to determine how much "escalation," if any, is warranted.
I would have no problem defending any decision I make. Insofar as criticism from other users is concerned, the only criticism that a moderator should respond to (that is, change his/her behavior in response to) is that which comes from those persons higher than himself/herself in the QRZ hierarchy - AA7BQ and supermods/admins. This is not a democracy nor should it be.
That pretty much describes Amateur Radio as a whole :) Anyone who has been in a management position in an Amateur Radio club or a charitable organization is familiar with the concept of doing something as a "labor of love," so to speak. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt that I use to cover up the scars :)
As I said recently in a thread, you have the right to your opinion even if it is wrong. What you don't have the right to do is to present your opinion in such a way as to personally attack, demean or belittle members of the 'zed who hold differing opinions. Naturally this is going to be a judgment call in the majority of cases and someone's ox always gets gored. Which brings us back to the undeniable truth that moderating a forum is essentially a no-win situation.
Direct personal attacks against a member. Obviously obscene or pornographic wording or images. Overt calls for violent action against an individual. Blatant, obvious trolling.
Overtly partisan behavior. This is not the same as making it obvious where one's sympathies lie.
If a post that is obviously against the community standards and rules remains visible or unmoderated for too long it will, in the minds of some, be taken as, "Hey, he got away with it; guess I can do it, too." Speed is important. However, given the sheer number of posts it is unrealistic to expect moderators to read and evaluate each and every post for conformance to the rules and standards. This is why the general membership needs to report questionable posts. I have reported several in my time here. A few were acted on, some were not. But each time I reported a post I felt secure in the knowledge that it would at least be looked at by the moderation staff. Consistency: extremely important. You can be diligent about consistently applying the rules and still get criticized by members for favoritism and "dictatorial behavior." Goes with the territory.
The rules apply to everyone equally, whoever you might be and whatever those rules may be, and should be enforced equally. That is really the only concept of fairness that matters.
Without knowing who the "others" are and what their CVs contain it's difficult to answer that question in a meaningful way. Do long experience as a ham (46 years), life experience and having been a member of the 'zed for a decade count?
As of right now I can't think of any I would like to see changed. But who knows what the future holds?

Actually not. This was explained in another thread. Its often used as an internet 'slang' that carries implications. That's why the one poster uses it so frequently.

The definitions I have seen all say that "teh" means "the" and is used to emphasize the next word. The only implication I see is that the user of such an illiteracy is trying to be cute...and fails miserably.

That kind of garbage does happen here from time to time and should not be tolerated.

It tends to create negative feelings toward the mod and the site. Mods are representatives of the site and might as well wear uniform that identifies as such.
It's one thing to close a thread and say "this has gotten out of hand" and do the deed...
It is less than fine form to "just another one of your conspiracy theories" then close the thread.
Snarky comments never have respectful qualities to them and when there is no retort possible not even a smile that is in poor form.

Give me the job and I will write the code to make filters so users do not need to see all of the BS, That they do not want to see.

Code can be a good moderator.

I really do not need more work, But I am available to do some cool coding.

Please elect me in November. :p

    Sincerely yours, Donald. :D

I've only seen one particular mod here do it routinely. Could be easily dealt with by higher ups.

    That is a valuable lesson!

True Story: As the Lead Inspector I learned to always C.Y.A. and document everything.

One day the President and Vice-President come storming into my office. The President yells: "Who's the AXXHOLE who sent these parts to stock?"

I went into my locked desk and pulled out a marked-up print with discrepancies, date, time and person who authorized acceptance. I handed it to the President and said "That AXXHOLE would be you Sir".

Needless to say I was laid off at the end of the week and collecting unemployment.

Moderators should have minimal experience with the cast of characters and the particular forum.so as not to be appointed with pre conceived strong biases.
That will be the hardest part.

Fred sets down the guidelines so we dont have selective moderation as has happened on other form categories.
