Yes, We sure have. The early CB-SSB rigs were kind of expensive but, it was legal back in the early 60's.

It's still legal today, is it not? I've never done it, but I know plenty of guys who do or have. Unfortunately, that's a very bad method of determining the legality of it.

Yes, it's still legal today. In fact, AM & SSB are the only modulation techniques that have ever been allowed on regular CB in the USA. The frequency & phase-modulation discussed in the UK article have never been legal over here. If passed, the proposal will simply allow CB users in the UK to use AM & SSB on the harmonized CEPT CB band that is in use across much of Europe - which is the same as the US CB band. The proposed power levels are the same as ours - 4W carrier on AM & 12W PEP on SSB. Frequency & phase-modulation will still be the only modulation techniques allowed on the UK-only CB band.

They are not changing anything about their existing 40 CH's, they are ADDING 40 more from 26.965 to 27.405 to allow the use of US type FCC certified CB radios, no FM on the new freqs. This wil not allow most export radios, the power limitations are the same as the US. They completely mimic the US CB bandplan.

I wonder how many will now be enticed to just get a CB and be content with it, not go on to an amateur radio ticket?
After all, when the band opens it will be possible to work stations easier using SSB,especially now the frequencies are compatible.
But probably those folks will tire of the ever present congestion and limitations and either give up on their 'NEW" band or pony up to get their amateur licenses:)

Question: Why would we even care in the US?

Maybe we're worried about Spanish expatriates getting on CB in the UK and splattering their "HOLA HOLA HOLA" onto 10m.

Hopefully, It will stay confined to the 11 meter band and that won't happen?

Sadly my attempt at deadpan didn't work well in print...

It would appear that some if not most cannot remove themselves from their 11 Meter heritage...............

    Go Noles............
