    Typhoon causes deaths and mayhem

At least four people have been killed as Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda) moves through the Philippines capital of Manila housing 12 million as the weather system continues on its destructive path.

Manila was shut down today (Wednesday) as the storm, the first of the season, had earlier emerged from the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday night to make landfall in the archipelago.

The Philippine Amateur Radio Association President Thelma Pascua DU1IVT hours earlier activated its Ham Emergency Radio Operation (HERO) network, mostly on 7095 kHz.

Thelma DU1IVT reported that Manila had been affected including electricity supply, giving residents hardly any sleep as winds of 150-185kph battered the area for hours.

The Government announced that every precaution is being taken to minimise deaths after Super Typhoon Haiyan struck the central Philippines in November last year.

The Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) of 2013 was a wake-up call for many who previously dismissed severe weather warnings. They seemed to be more prepared this time.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council warned the public of the storm, with possible landslides, flash floods, strong rains and winds.

Currently Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda) has wind gusts of up to 250 kilometres an hour with intense rain. After gaining force over the ocean it resulted in evacuations in remote fishing villages and low lying areas in the eastern Philippines late Tuesday.

The HERO network and other emergency agencies were working closely together.

The storm is expected to leave the Philippines soon but leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
