You mention on your site that you're looking for something open source to run your site.

Try NVU. it's an open source editor.

You could also try WordPress or even WordPressMU.

WordPress is a Content Management System primarily designed for blogs but with very little effort I've used it to make other types of sites. WordPress MU is a wordpress derivative designed to allow you to host multiple sites on the same server with centralized administration.

An example site I built in WordPress is http://www.sheridanroadbaptistchurch.com/ it's a little sparse on content but that's because the church it was built for never followed up. Adding content is simple with WordPress.

I can provide you some guidance and assistance on getting setup with WordPress or WordPressMU

Thanks
Eric

That's VERY magnanimous of you! My ISP already hosts my website for free, but thank you very kindly for your very generous offer! I'm sure folks whose ISP doesn't offer free hosting will be delighted with your offer!

I don't have a static IP. Using DynDNS that is one of the choices they have when using their service.

I don't want to be a kill joy, but if you are using DynDNS because you are running your web server out of your home, then be careful. Operating a web server out of your home is "ok" if you are hosting just your site, and your site only. Then you are still at risk at best.

Under most ISP terms and conditions it states that you can't run a web server off of their home service agreement. If you want to host multiple web sites they require you to purchase a business package.

Like I said if you are running a personal site, they will usually overlook it, but if you are hosting sites for 20+ Amateur Radio operators, they are going to shut off your service and require you to get a business class plan ($$).

I just wanted to give you a heads up before a lot of hams are left in the dark with no access to their site.

You may be fine for a while, but when your ISP does a port scan, which they do occasionally, they will find your web server responding to the request. (As well as your FTP server. Which is a violation as well.)

Just 2 pennies thrown in a deep well.

I think KD0HOQ makes a good point. It may be interesting setting up a webserver at home, but web space hosted at a data center is so cheap nowadays there really is no point.

To answer the question about wanting something open source to develop your website, I use CMS Made Simple to manage G4ILO's Shack. It's a great piece of software, but it's support forum is probably one of the most hostile places in cyberspace and woe betide you if you haven't RTFM, don't provide every relevant detail or post your question in the wrong topic.

I also maintain a business website which is developed in plain PHP and HTML. I use Quanta Plus (on Linux) to maintain that. It actually allows you to edit files directly on the server instead of working on local copies and forgetting to upload them when you're done.

About 20 minutes worth of work.

Wow, I could see a lot of potential problems with that. I'm assuming you backup regularly to prevent data loss? Do changes go into production immediately? I'm more of a fan of running a secondary test server even if it's only running on your local machine so you can test your changes before making them available to the world.

That's just me though.

I used to run until I found out that it jars the hell out of your joints and spine. I now walk briskly and will arrive at your destination a little while later. But, more power to you if this is what you like.
