Default ATV Questions for our schoo

Hi, all.

I have a few questions about an ATV station that I want to set up at our school (I'm the Radio Club co-sponsor).

We don't need anything fancy or high-res, but I'd like our kids to be able to do news broadcasts from both our radio room and out on location, and have area parents and schools be able to watch us on their cable TVs.

A radius of 10 miles from the remote broadcast team to the school and about the same from the school's repeater to area rabbit ears would be great.

Any reason I can't do it all on UHF, small yagi in the field with a P.C. Electronics transmitter, then re-transmit it on a different channel by our IC-910H back at the school?

We don't need a fancy setup. But the kids would love to run a little studio and an on-location mobile unit, and it would encourage more of them to get a Technician ticket!

Thanks for the help,
Ross/WI0N

Let's look at one of the related Technician exam questions:

Which of the following one-way communications may NOT be transmitted in the amateur service?

Broadcasts intended for reception by the general public

This seems to indicate that what you are proposing is not allowable at any time.

What if the link from the field to the school used Amateur radio, but the link from the school to the parents used the Internet?

That question has already been answered.

What you want is not ATV but LPTV. LPTV stations are not awfully expensive, and money may can come from some facet of the school budget. The licenses are a different matter, though, and may be difficult to obtain in some areas.

An alternative is CCTV within the school. If you do that, you may can convince your local cable company to carry the channel. IF they do, all your problems are solved, and at very little cost.

Of course, internet TV is still another possibility, and a very viable and cheap one.

So you are not at a dead end. Were it me, I would start with the internet TV broadcasting, and possibly move to full CCTV if desired. But internet broadcasting can do all you seek.

There is no way to do it with amateur radio.

Good luck

What ham radio is NOT: civic duty; cell phone; ambulance, hospital, fire or police radio; ISP, CB, FRS, GMRS, Marine, aviation. No one should be required to obtain a ham license as a part of his job!!
