Default Fox Hunting Rules

I am going to be putting on a few fox hunts over the next few months and was wondering what are some common fox hunt rules?
This Saturday we are having one which will be done on foot. Are there any common rules that most clubs use for on foot fox hunts?

If participation is high enough this Saturday we will probably host a city wide fox hunt were the participants will have to use their vehicles to find the fox. Are there any common rules that apply for city wide hunts?

Thanks for any help.

Depends on if you catch-n-release the fox or if your gonna blast the poor thing. Then it pretty much depends on fire arms discharge in the city stuff ^..^

We used to do them near Pottstown, Pa. Limerick nuclear plant is there. After 9/11 all maps were marked with 1 miles zone around the nuke plant that you could not place the fox, nor should you go there looking for one.

Also, the fox had to be on public property.

We had one guy that was notorious for pulling into a park where the fox was and claiming he had found it, without ever getting out the car. We were always watching, and would ask what the label on the fox says? He would then get pissed and start walking around looking for it.

I wouldn't go for a fox hunt on foot.

The fox has that 4-leg advantage and I wouldn't keep up for long.

In Europe, I always tried to make sure the fox was at least 16 years old!

Fox Hunting Rules
There's rules to it? I guess that means I can't setup the fox through a repeater with a wide footprint.

People always have to go spoiling everything with those rules things.

The reason that you are not getting a single, positive and coherent answer is that the rules for casual foxhunts tend to vary from place to place.

There are official rules for the radiosport type foxhunts, where they compete locally, regionally and internationally, but most local groups aren't that interested in being official - they just want to have fun and be get their skills polished up for tracking down occasional problems they encounter with the local repeater.

We don't foxhunt at my location very much if any, because we are located within spitting distance of the Mexican border and guess where most of the problem VHF transmissions tend to originate here?

The one occasion that I can remember a problem here being DF'ed was when a couple of precocious grandkids got into grandpa's hamshack, which he had locked up when he quit being active as a ham. They thought it was funny to use nasty language on the radio, which was tuned to the local repeater. Somebody tracked down the transmissions, the kids got their britches dusted, and that was the end of the problem. One good side effect was that grandpa decided to sell the equipment, and ended up with some extra cash.

So read up on foxhunting, and start off with something simple and fun to do. I hear that a barbeque afterward is very popular, and sometimes there are prizes for the winners, like immunity from being elected to any club position for a year. - Something like that, whatever tickles everyone's fancy.

The main thing is to have fun, so everybody wants to be there for the next foxhunt.

Thanks for the responses.

I think for this first fox hunt, I will leave out most rules since we are doing it in a park. N3XP mentioned writing something on the fox, which I didn't think of doing and I may consider doing something like that.
The fox will be located on 147.555 but I will put my HT on 146.550, that way people can let me know when they find it, the word on the fox is great.

If we do a city wide fox hunt I was thinking about possibly doing two different classes of "hunters." One for people that have a doppler system and one for everyone else.

As for the rules on where the fox can be placed, I'll always be the one placing the fox so I'll just use common sense when placing it somewhere.
