    CNN News in Morse Code

Chris Kantarjiev K6DBG has set up an application that takes the CNN news feed on Twitter and converts it to Morse code.

The Morse audio is streamed in a WinAmp format and so will NOT work with Windows Media Player. You need to install WinAmp on your PC, which is available from the URL below.

Two varients of the Morse CNN news are available, slow and fast, at
    http://cw.dimebank.com:8080/CNNslow.m3u
    and
    http://cw.dimebank.com:8080/CNNfast.m3u

Chris K6DBG has also made available NN9U's CW practice tables and W1AWCW practice at
    http://cw.dimebank.com:8080/

I am not a CW guy, but this is a cool way to practice and learn. Awesome little application.

Never been a fan of CNN, their a bunch of windbags putting out misinformation just for entertainment value. But if someone really wants to practice CW morse code then why don't the person just get on the air? Come on really, another ploy to advertise for CNN the most untrusted news in the world. A nice QSO on the hf bands is better to learn by picking up the key and practice practice practice. And leave the entertainment and distractions behind, get down to brass tacks or in this case a brass key!

Couldn't he do this with Fox News?

Waiting for the RTTY version, so I can crank up the noisy TeleTypes and remind myself what the newsrooms (newpaper and radio) sounded like in 1960s and 1970s. By 1980s, the whin of dot matrix printers replaced the AP news feed at the radio stations.

Any chance this will ever work using Windows Media Player?

    News

Who wants to hear the news at all anymore. ;) Not much of it is good these days.

Can't always get on the air to practice and stay proficient, so it's nice to have other ways to listen to CW (on the MP3 player/phone.)

For those that have all day to sit in the shack and work CW, more power to you. Hope I have that time some day.

    News on Morse

Simon, aa9pw, has had the news and sports headlines in Morse from a variety of sources for a number of years now on his excellent website at: http://aa9pw.com/morsecode/
He also offers QSO and code groups...3 -50 wpm, and amateur and commercial written tests.

It's working fine for me in Windows Media Player 9 and Windows 98SE.

    News Rebroadcasts in Morse

Great idea to foster use of cw. But it does raise the question as to how you would verify you have received the code correctly--you can't necessarily compare the copy to the truth. You'd have to find a Morse version of the news you believed. ;o)

ARMY MARS did this during the Vietnam war era with American baseball games, a lot less subjective.

NBF NY FORD....S1C....etc. (Phillips Code baseball play-by-play "now batting for New York, Whitey Ford...Striket One Called...etc.").

As many know, commercial telegraphers originated play-by-play broadcasts via Morse right into the '50s for recreation back at the broadcast station.

While one can't receive baseball play-by-play any longer via telegraph (American Morse Code), one can receive 24-hour weather and news broadcasts and listen to them in authentic American Morse using a real telegraph sounder or via Windows media player with simulated audio replicating a telegraph sounder. Of course, it's not the Continental Code hams use, but it's solid, authentic land-line code.

Those interested can learn more at "morsekob.org" as well as the Morse Telegraph Club web site at "morsetelegraphclub.org."

Hey Paul...how did Army MARS get the text for the games? Was it via Western Union's "Paragraph One" baseball service?

Fox News? They are not a news channel, it's more like an entertainment channel and the comment about not interesting in hearing news anymore. I second that motion as there is an overload of new channels and fox doesn't care about fact checking like the rest a bunch of entertainment channels. The orginal ideal like W1AW is best in my opinion for any new ham or old ham and practice on the air is better than listening one way as its better. We have enough garbage news channels, let's stick to the basics.

Not stepping in that "pile", LOL!

Well, considering the Homeland Security Secretary has called me, Right-wing Extremist, Nancy Pelosi, called me a NAZI, Others in Congress called me a Republican rabble-rouser (I'm an Independent) and Jeannie Garafalo called me a racist....Well, I do watch NASCAR, LOL! I'm not going to comment on Keith's post. I'll just say I disagree and let it go at that. :D

    GOD BLESS,
    Respectfully submitted,
