Default Another 10M Gripe! I just can't help myself!

10M FM Net! Yeah! First one heard! Yeah!
It was on 28.400. Illegal? Hell no! LID behavior? Hell yes!

I don't know who was operating on 28.400 first but BOOM! There was 10 and it was a complete mess. Guys on SSB trying to call CQ, a couple in a QSO and the guys on FM destroying the SSB stuff. Switch to FM to see what the heck is going on. SSB guys tearing the heck out of FM.

Gotta wonder how many Techs checked into the Net....Techs, you know FM is not within your operating privileges don't you?

I got one call, and I emailed him to make sure I copied his call correctly and this morning he emailed me back saying yes I did! And he was unable to copy me (Probably because I didn't call) but he would upload me to LOTW and I could send a card if I wished.....cause....he loves cards!
Why would anybody send a card if you had no contact?

Anywho...this guy is an Extra with some time under his belt...He should know better.

RELAX ! Take some deep breaths and count to 100 ! I can bet that he has gotten dozens of cards for Illinois. Monmouth is certainly NOT a rare DX location, so if you wanted to send him a card, he would probably just toss it in the shoebox with the hundreds of other cards ( many from Illinois ) that he has probably obtained over the years !

Not something that I would get all hyper about. But of course, that is JMHO !

73, from that "rare" state of Maryland.

Not my point. I have a bunch of cards from CO....MD too! My point was the LID behavior.

I did a google search and found this:

http://www.ppraa.org/

This is a club! With 126 members (as of 8/08). You'd think somebody would have mentioned a 10M FM net on 28.400 was a bad idea and would make a fat guy in Illinois cry.

Thursday Night Nets - Come join us Thursday night at 7PM for Doc's Glow Net. It's an informal rag chewing and radio adjusting forum. We start out on 10 meter SSB, 28.4 Mhz then later switch to AM mode then FM mode and perhaps other modes if able. It's a good opportunity to learn how to adjust your rig for other modes besides SSB. Last week we had six hams on the net and hope more will join us. Doc, W0MCT will be the net control. If Dan, W0RO, is on, he can record your audio and you can hear how you sound!

Agreed ….not good.

Definitely lid behavior, and possibly illegal. Below 29 MHz, the deviation of an FM signal cannot exceed it's highest modulating frequency, IOW deviation must be 3 KHz or less. Most radios that do 10M FM are set to 5KHz, since that is the standard up in the "FM portion".

The smart thing to do would be to conduct the SSB portion of the NET on 28.390 so Techs could join in then, move up to 29.005 to conduct the FM and AM portion of the net. I say smart but what I really mean is considerate.

I can operate any mode I want on 10 but I choose to follow the agreed upon band plans for the mode I'm using. I consider anyone who doesn't do the same to be a total LID.

Exactly. By conducting an FM net on 28.400, they are promoting lid behavior. It is not appropriate to use FM there, even if it might be legal, at least if the deviation is correct. Bandplans are developed to keep certain modes in certain areas, to reduce confusion and increase compatibility. I would avoid using 29.005 for FM, since the sidebands of a "normal" FM signal will fall outside the 29MHz lower limit.
