Default FT-857 with HF Power Rods (Hamstick clones)

I finally got a chance for a good operating session with that combination, and it worked very well on 20. I've got the antenna mounted to the hatch of a '92 Celica with a Diamond K400 mount. The mount went on easy, and the antenna tuned predictably and easily, and got out pretty well. I was in the parking lot at work between 12 and 1 EST in Norwalk, CT. In a short period I worked England twice, Belgium once, and Missouri once. The Europeans came back on my first call to them, and the stateside contact was an answer to my first CQ. All of the reports were "solid copy through QSB." So...the radio/antenna combination gets out just fine. I could've worked a lot more but had to get back to work (); I'm looking forward to a lot more operating.

Your contacts to Europe are great. Since I've gotten into HF and from my QTH of SoCal, I've made contacts in Portugal and Spain. Going the other direction (west), I've only gotten as far as Japan about 6 or 7 times now.

I wish I could get the UK, Germany or any other Euopean country for that matter. Canada and Mexico are nothing new and rather easy contacts.

I'm talking about making contacts with just 100watts and Hamsticks. I made a small stake in the gound about 17 inches up from the earth. I then screw in a Hamstick while using a Pro-Am "Quick Disconnect" adapter. That way I can utilize all of my Hamsticks with the various bands. I also lay out about 10 9' wire radials out and I've had extremely good luck with Hamsticks.

I do say they are the "rubber ducks" of HF verticals, but hey......they work.

Default Updated with 75m results

I finally got some reports on 75 with this rig, and it was as good as 40 and 20. The combination gets out well, and I'm looking forward to a lot more operating time as the weather warms up. Currently, Europe is routine during the day on 20m and tonight I was getting out to the west and south decently, even with some nasty QRN going on.

Again, it was easy to hook-up and get on the air, and the results are very, very good. I'm having a ball with it.

The path from CA to western Europe is difficult and will remain so until the sunspot count starts to rise. At the moment there are no sunspots but when conditions do improve surprisingly contact between the UK and CA is quite easy.
The more difficult paths are TX and KS, why ? Who knows !

Talking

Well today, I used a Hamstick from Southern California and talked to Austrailia for 20 minutes. Then, I talked to central Russia. Hamsticks work.

Here's your answers:

1) They didn't. They started bombing the middle east. Albeit, not enough though.

2) What frigg'n "detailed analysis" do you want right after you see two airliners crash into the buildings on live TV? How hard is it to figure out what the hell happened after you see the crashes???? In case you forgot, here's a recap: 3 civilian airliners had some fanatical radicals on board that committed mass murder/suicide by crashing the jets into American targets. End of story. Now, is there any need for a "detailed analysis?"

3) Our air defenses at the time were waiting for the old "Soviet Threat" of Russian bombers. We were still coming out of "cold war" thinking. We, nor ANY OTHER COUNTRY's defenses were ever looking for "attacking Kamikazee airliners" filled with innocent civilians.

Don't post dumb questions unless you're ready for witty responses.
