Alinco Mobile 2m rigs

I have an Alinco older 2m mobile rig. I have heard, and observed with mine, that the PA seems to get very hot with minimal tx time. Is this normal for Alinco radios? I have heard this and wonder if others have encountered the same. I know my antenna is good and matched, it is a commercial grade 5/8 cut to the appropriate frequency.

Any help would be appreciated

Although I have never owned or operated an Alinco rig, I can tell you that the heat generated by the output stage of an FM transceiver is considerable and depends on both the power output and the transmitting duty cycle...My impression is that VHF and UHF mobile FM transceiver manufacturers are very much aware of this and that's why, for example, the case of my ICOM 2100 FM mobile rig is nearly all of a finned heatsink construction.

I'd insure that you have adequate air space around the case...Especially above, behind and to the sides to insure adequate convection of the heat away from the radio...IMHO, an obstruction-free space of 2 inches or more adjacent to these areas should be adequate but YMMV.

Check your SWR. They will heat up pretty hot pretty fast if they are getting a good amount of reflected power.

I've heard that Alincos tend to run hot, but I would make sure you don't have a feedline issue or antenna issue also.

Running an Alinco DR 605 with upped power to 75 watts on 2 and 50 on 70.
Does that for 5 years now in the van here in Holland and in France on our hollidays.

Added an temperature controled fan under the heatsink, the transciever is mounted in the van free of any obstructions.


They get hot, but as said, all FM transcievers get hot.
An added fan will prolong life by keeping the parts cool.

My experience has been that all Alincos run hotter than other radios within the same class. Don't know why, but they just do.

Yes, I used (borrowed) one of their newer, cheapee 2 meter units for an ARES simplex excerise at the net control station. Not only did the huge heatsink get really hot, the whole case got warm. The owner told me to not worry, that is how Alincos run.

that I have had.. Don't remember what it was anymore..( 10 years ago)

Yes, even on low power, my brand new Alinco 222Mhz radio runs very warm. On high power after transmitting for a short time, it gets plain hot.

I was told by "everyone" that Alinco's are always "hot." So far, I've operated it on high power (DR-235T, 25watts) in desert temperatures in excess of 115F (this past summer in the Mojave Desert). It never failed. In fact, I really pushed this radio on purpose just to see what happens. It continued to work.

I've also noticed that my Yaesu's run cooler and an HF radio tends to run cooler. I believe the reason is that when transmitting on SSB, the radio doesn't draw power unless their is a carrier (your voice etc...) Unlike an FM radio where when you key the mike, power is being broadcast 100% of the time until you release the PTT button.

I run 2 alinco rigs the 235 220mhz and 435 440mhz and they both get hot. I had an extedned QSO and when I was done the radio was hot. All the research I have done found out that Alinco's run hotter than others.

I don't know about running hotter , haven't checked .

I do know I have a 10+ year old DR-130 in one of my trucks and day in and day out it hasn't given me trouble on our drive time net in the Phx area
