I'm going to likely purchase Belden RG8U coax for my station, and need to know what everyone's experience has been with it. Is it really lossy? High SWR problems? I'm especially interested in hearing from those who had to use at least 100 feet or more.

If there was alot of loss, what did you do to recover from it? What did you do for any problems you had, and did it work?

On what frequency are you planning to use it?

RG8U of RG 213 is good for H.F, and the coax itself will not cause an bad swr, provided the transciever coax and antenna are 50 (52) Ohms.

Personally speaking, i don't skimp in the coax department, on H.F. and 6 meters i use Aircom Plus, and 2 meters and higher the Ecoflex 15 1/2 inch coax, both very low loss.

In my experience in 30+ years of hamradio, the best part of your station wich will cost you the most money is antenna's and cables and good connectors, wich WILL pay off more as an fancy transciever with mediocre antenna and coax.

Coax works both ways, transmiting and recieving.
So, loss here will reduce your output and you loose signal for the reception.
This will be noticably on 6 and higher, though on H.F. i also don't want to waste power from the SB-1000 in lossy coax and want the best performance i get from my antenna's.

My runs are between 25 to 30 meters or 80 to 100 feet.

All coax here is double screened, very low loss coax.
Better do an search on Google for specifications on the mentioned coax, and their losses.

Be sureto use good quality coax connectors, and use selfamalgamating tape to make all connections outside really waterproof.

Even only using N connectors wich i use on all coaxcables, i waterproof connections because 100+ meters of coax like the Ecoflex 15 costs now 5.50 Euro an meter, or roughly 8 dollars an meter.

For that i have less as 1 dB loss on 23 meters of coax and connectors on 2 meter, 1.2 dB loss on 70 meters with 25 meters coax.

On 6 meter i have less as 0.4 dB loss, on H.F. the
loss is 0.1 dB on 10 meters.

73,

Cor

The coax is going to be used for VHF/UHF, i'm not on HF yet. Thanks for the comment!
