if you can find an early version of Linux, they would make a good hardware firewall appliance. Other than that, they are fodder for the recyclers.

If you were paying $35 or $40 for someone to take the machine "off your hands" you would have much better luck!

I still have a 486 machine sitting on a shelf. Frankly, unless you are using it for something like a word processor there is just not much available today in the way of programs that still work on a computer that old.

It's useless. Put it out with the trash.

You can use it as a stand-along DOS machine. Win 3.1 will run on it. Early versions of Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data processing) will run on it. Thousands of shareware games and programs that came out in the late 80's and early 90's will run on it. Lots of stuff still floating around that will run on it. Use it for Packet or other ham related programs. Nothing is totally useless unless you want the latest and the greatest.

It's called hoarding. Get rid of it.

hmm good point but if everyone threw away theyre old computers, we wouldnt have vintage computers and everything would be lost/forgotten... and i wanna get this 486 up and running because me and my friend are starting a computer buisness and we want it to be the main hub that everything runs around, we have software and everything its just we need to get it setup.
