I've only had Win 7 about a week, and I'm impressed. I skipped over Vista entirely.
I was impressed how well it ran on my ancient Sempron (Win7 pre release)
Only slightly slower than XP Home on the same box with all the unnecessary services disabled. (my TV recording box) I plan on picking it up next year and running it on this box (my ancient P4/HT)

When it's time, it's time, and it may be sooner than you think.

I have notebooks running all over the house on a WiFi router.
But here in the shack, it's Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition with 16TB of disks and 24GB of RAM, dual Nehalem 3.2 GHz CPUs and nVIDIA graphics accelerator junque. Pretty fast machine. So fast that it changes screens before I can get my finger off the "enter" key and thus frequently fakes me out because I didn't notice anything happen.
But it also has six cooling fans in it and makes noise. I wouldn't want this running in the background if I was on "phone" with a mike the picked up background noise. The power supply blowers alone are dual 120mm 120 cfm units that blow around loose papers in the shack.
Just started using Windblows 7. I've only had it for a couple days.... so far so good. The biggest thing I noticed.... it doesn't ask you 57 times if you want to do that!!!!!!!!!!!!
For great speed using most ham radio software, the 64 bit machines can't be beat. There are some issues using older software but most will run when defeating the signed driver requirement and to open them using "administrator" permissions. I had problems at first using the new software defined radio software but Flex Radio eventually had their software "signed" and now everything runs smoothly and fast.
