Whatever you do...keep a close eye on the cooling fan at the rear of the radio. Make sure it spins freely - operates correctly - and comes on when it's supposed to.

Failure of this part will result in power-supply pass-transistor overheating and destruction, and along with them the RF final amplifier transistors are usually destroyed. This is the one Achilles Heel of an otherwise decent rig, and several fixes for the issue are detailed 'round the 'Net.
