Default Minor Success!

I got to thinking that getting no resistance on the DL was not only odd but potentially impossible. This morning I took a hard look at the tuner and realized that I could take the DL rod out of the unit quite easily. This I did and made a VOM test directly on it. Still no resistance!

Next step: Wonder about the VOM as the DL rod looks to be a solid and therefore impossible to develop a fault.

For once on this whole project I was lucky as I had another VOM. It seemed the cheaper of the two so I never really took it out of the old box.
Anyway, testing the DL with that proves a solid 50 Ohms!

Once the roof defrosts I'll be up on it to take the antennas down and move them.

Does the dummy load resistor read fifty ohms when installed in the tuner by setting the tuner to the dummy load position and measuring the resistance at the transmitter connector between the center conductor and the threads??

Coolness!

That is good at least you know that you have a good dummy load.

We shall have to see what the ICOM folks have to say about the radio. Shame you are not closer or vise verse I could of had sorted all this out 3 days ago

As an aside, this experience makes me wonder how to get to (or near) the stage you're at Sue. I've a pile of books ATM, most recently Basic Radio and also Basic Communications Electronics. I've set Basic Electronics aside for now because, quite frankly, IMO I feel that the author skipped a step in the algebra section (page 3-3). But that's for another forum I guess.

Anyway, the A-D DX-EE is re-hung and I'm resonant at or below 1.8:1 throughout the 15 and 20M phone bands (General sections). 40M is flat at 7.085Mhz so I think I need to trim a little bit. 10M is good in the lower half of the phone band. Speaking of trimming, I can't get the DX-DD (40/80) up as I need to trim some trees first. That will have to wait until the pond freezes over (long story).

I suppose I'll now go on hiatus while the next few weeks pass and the tech gets a chance to look over the rig.

I started young;

You can do a surprising amount without a lot of math.
The math aids in understanding what is going on.
I had learned quite a bit on my own, but when I picked up my AS degree that experience filled in all missing basic knowledge.

Get your hands dirty, build things, if they smoke, learn why. If electronics is for you, you will have a hunger to learn. Just be patient, I worked in electronics for twenty one years before the hand of fate brought it all to an end, now it's just a hobby.

Good advice Sue, thanks. I do possess the kind of mind that needs to know how and why if not quite the formal education to make it easier than it is .
Of course at 45 I'd prefer to avoid too many rabbit trails (like threads to ground as well as bad a VOM ).
